The Annual UB Distinguished Speakers Series
The Dalai Lama, Sidney Poitier, Al Gore, Elie Wiesel, Tim Russert, Bill Cosby, George Bush, Toni Morrison, Jane Goodall, Katie Couric... an apparently disparate grouping of familiar names that have at least one thing in common - they have all appeared at UB as part of the DSS. Since 1987, we have been bringing speakers of national and international renown to campus several times a year to shed insight, provoke thought and stimulate conversation about some of our time’s most compelling issues, stories and events.
UB began its Distinguished Speakers Series (DSS) as a way to attract alumni, friends and community neighbors to our relatively new North campus. By offering entertaining educational opportunities that are unique and unavailable elsewhere, UB has succeeded in attracting scores of alumni and friends to campus, as well as enhancing the quality of student life. The first series featured a number of highly regarded experts in the fields of politics and the presidency. The lecture programs have since expanded to include internationally renowned scientists, authors, media experts and other luminaries.
DSS has become a well established and highly regarded highlight of the university calendar, and an integral part of community life. The Undergraduate Student Association, the Graduate Student Association and the Division of Student Affairs work closely with the Office of Special Events to identify and help fund speakers who have particular appeal for students. DSS also addresses an important role of the university’s mission - public service in the community - by dedicating at least one speaker per year to address societal issues and concerns.
